Mowers rumble ’round track to crowd’s delight

Curiosity propelled - and extreme heat did not deter - more than 300 people attending the Pea Ridge Lions Club inaugural Race for Sight lawnmower race Saturday at the old race track on Arkansas Highway 72.

Spectators watched three races and outlaw class exhibitions. Free ice cream from Breyers, Smokin’ Joe’s meltin-your-mouth barbecue and hundreds of bottles of water were provided.

Later, the Cobb Brothers Blue Grass Band, featuring brothers Samuel, Caleb and Nathan of Mountain View, entertained the crowd.

Proceeds from the race will go toward eye exams and eyeglasses for people of all ages with limited means, sight conservation programs such as Lions World Services for the Blind and other service projects in the Pea Ridge area.

The Pea Ridge Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday nights at Pea Ridge Methodist Church. For more information, call Jerry Nichols at 621-1621 or Harry Palmer at 640-0767.
