Treasurer arrested

— Former church treasurer Cathy Sue Spivey, 42, was arrested Wednesday, April13, for felony theft of property from Twelve Corners Baptist Church.

An audit has been scheduled to determine the exact amount of funds missing.

Benton County Sheriff’s Investigator Geovanni Serrano met with the pastor, Rick Booyer, who said he had noticed discrepancies in the church’s finances. He told the investigator he had met with Spivey and her husband and she admitted that she had been embezzling money.

Spivey, formerly Cathy Mitchell, has been treasurer since 2006.

When bank statements were examined, according to the press release, it was found that Spivey had written numerous checks to herself for personal reasons.

Currently, there are several thousands of dollars missing.

Spivey and her attorney met with Investigator Serrano at the Sheriff’s Office and she admitted to taking the money.

Spivey, of Pea Ridge, was booked into the Benton County Jail at 2:40 p.m. and released at 7:51 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. She is scheduled to appear in Benton County Circuit Court on May 23.
