Davis Street opens

— Traffic began to flow on North Davis Street again Tuesday after city Street Department employees finished back- filling the surface along the curb south of the new drainage culvert.

“The drainage culvert was finished 13 days early,” M.J. Hensley, engineer, said, explaining that the construction firm had 50 days according to the contract.

The work, which may have seemed to take a long time, Hensley said, was on time. He said utility poles were moved by the power and cable company in July and August. The concrete for the culvert box had to cure - each wall had to cure seven days before it could be “back filled,” Hensley said, and then the top had to cure 28 days.

“We’re on schedule,” Hensley said.

“I think it’s a tremendous improvement and M.J.’s done a wonderful job,” Mayor Jackie Crabtree said of the project.

Hensley said the city’s subdivision ordinance requires a drop inlet every 300 feet, but there is only one on this stretch of road, so when there is a “real hard rain,” there may be standing water at the bottom until more inlets are installed.

The paving contractors will be notified that the paving may begin, Hensley said.
