Habitat comes to town

New home built for single mother and daughters

— As ground was broken, the slab poured and the house began to take shape, Tammy Sutherland watched the culmination of a two-year dream for a home for her and her two young daughters, ages 8 and 6.

Sutherland, who also has four grown children and three grandchildren, said she filled out the application for a Habitat for Humanity house two years ago.

Sutherland works for Lindsey and Associates and will be working for at least 150 hours on the house. Her family and friends will contribute time and labor to the project as well, and many joined her at the house site Monday for the official ground breaking.

The three-bedroom, two-bath house will be on the corner of North Davis Street and Tinnin Street.

The house is not cost free, but closing costs are low and the monthly payments are affordable. The interest is very low and Sutherland said most of the labor is donated.

“I have to work 150 hours, some can be at ReStore, the Habitat store,” she said, adding that many people donate time to building the house.

“I found out I was approved July 27.

Mine should be finished by Thanksgiving and the grand opening will be Dec. 16,” she said.

Sutherland’s daughters, although quiet at the ground breaking, think it’s cool and like going by the site to watch the progress, she said. “They want to help. They may get to paint some trim,” she said.

Sutherland, who has been a Girl Scout leader for 16 years, said members of her troop, as well as fellow Lindsey employees, will work on the house, also.
