City Council to appoint alderman

— Four people - Jerry Burton, Steve Guthrie, Christopher Hatch and Joseph Carlson - have expressed interest in the City Council seat vacated by John Cody, said Mayor Jackie Crabtree. No one filed to compete with the current incumbents.

According to Arkansas state statutes, “Whenever a vacancy shall occur in the office of alderman in any city of the second class, at the first regular meeting after the occurrence of the vacancy, the city council shall proceed to elect, by a majority vote of the council, an alderman to serve for the unexpired term.”

Cody e-mailed his resignation to the city recorder, Sandy Button, on July 29. His resignationwas presented to the Council at a special meeting Monday, Aug. 2, held in lieu of the July 20 meeting, which was canceled for lack of a quorum. The regular August meeting was held Aug.

Two City Council positions up for re-election are uncontested.

Council members Bob Cottingham and Nadine Telgemeier each filed for reelection. No one filed to contest either.

The mayor said anyone interested in the council vacancy may notify City Hall for consideration by the Council prior to Sept. 17. He said a special committee of the whole meeting will be held at 6 p.m. prior to the regular September 17 meeting to interview candidates.

The next City Council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21.
