— Editor’s note: Incumbent Eugene Nowak and Maryanne Maresh are candidates for Position 3 on the Garfield City Council. The general election is Nov. 2.

Eugene Nowak

Position: Garfield City Council Position 3

Age: 73

Birthdate: Dec. 8, 1936

Employment: Retired from construction.

Education: High school,one year of college at Lewis University in Illinois.

Residency: 22 years in Garfield.

Family: Wife, Lydia.

Military experience: Six years in National Guard, 1956-1962.

Political experience: Incumbent Garfield alderman for 20 years.

What do you think will be the biggest challenge for the city during your term, and how would you address it? The main thingis to make sure the voters are properly represented in the town of Garfield in regards toroads and potable water and things of that nature.

It’s nothing in particular, it’s a group of things.

Through the council, we do what we think is right.

Why do you think you’re the best person for the position? I think I’ve had more experience. I’ve been there for 20 years.

Maryanne Maresh

Position: Garfield City Council Position 3

Age: 58

Birthdate: Sept. 8, 1951

Employment: Homemaker.

Education: High school.

Residency: Garfield.

Thirty-three years at current address, which was recently annexed into the city.

Family: Husband, Ray, one daughter.

Military experience: None.

Political experience: None.

What do you think will be the biggest challengefor the city during your term, and how would you address it? I think the biggest challenge for the city of Garfield is revenue, and I think that the City Council should really work on bringing more small business to our community.

Why do you think you’re the best person for the position? I feel the present City Council members have all been in office for several years now, and there needs to be a change.
