The Pea Ridge Ministerial Alliance presented its annual Thanksgiving service on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church as a joint effort of the Methodist Church, pastor Carroll Renfro; First Baptist Church, pastor Forrest Wicks; Presbyterian Church, pastor Elliott Ohannes; and the Pentecostal Holiness Church, pastor Mrs. Pearl Soules.

The voters within the city limits of Pea Ridge will go to the polls next Tuesday, Dec. 1, to decide whether to back the City Council in its purchase of two downtown buildings for city use.

John Knox of Pea Ridge will be installed as the new president of the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce at the annual Chamber dinner slated for Dec. 5 in the school cafeteria.

30 Years Ago

The Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce approved support of the city’s proposed sewer project adding that adequate water and sewer systems would attract industry to town.

Mayor Lester Hall performed the swearing in ceremony for Alva Lee Johnson to fill the unexpired City Council term of Daryle Greene.

Basketball prospects were good for Pea Ridge High School, according to coaches Jim Roe and Cindy Mason, who had already competed in their first games.

20 Years Ago

Pea Ridge alderman Joe Hart said he will not apply for the appointment to the Ward 2, Position 1 alderman’s set he gave up in January because of his race for mayor. Hart was defeated Nov. 6 by incumbent Mayor Mary Rogers.

Beta Alpha Sororitytreated single senior citizens to a Thanksgiving dinner at the Pea Ridge High School Home Economics building.

Pea Ridge school superintendent Marvin Higginbottom inaugurated a new bus route within the city limits to improve safety and cut down on congestion at the school.

The Pea Ridge City Council approved a $2.1 million budget for 2001.

The increases were related to growth of the community, better neighborhoods and more civil servants such as new members of the ambulance service and the local police department.

The Garfield City Council met Tuesday, Nov. 14 to discuss budget ideas. The one-cent sales tax proposal failed by three votes, 47 to 44 in the general election, Nov. 7. At the time Garfield’s population numbers listed more than 300 residents, thus, less than one-third voted on the tax issue.

City employees were hard at work building the city’s tree of lights and stringing lights along the tops of downtown buildings in Pea Ridge. Along with the tree of lights on the old high school grounds, downtown buildings also displayed lights along their roofs. The annual Christmas Parade’s theme was “Winter Wonderland.”
