ALFRED JULIUS KING JR. died on Tuesday, November 22, 2010at 11 p.m. He was born June 25, 1919 to Alfred Julius King Sr. and LaParthenia La-Barritau King, then of DeWitt, Ark. He spent his childhood in the cities of DeWitt, El Myra, andLittle Rock, Ark. He professed his faith in Christianity while a child. He graduated from Dunbar High School in May of 1941. At the age of 21, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country in the United States Army from May 24, 1941 until August 4, 1944, when was honorably discharged. His military qualification was rifleman. His army specialty was Draftsman. The army characterized his character as excellent upon discharge. He married Ophelia S. Tatum of Stephens, Ark., on September 2, 1949, to whom he remained married until his death. He was a 1949 graduate of AM&N College (now UAPB) where he was a founding member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In 1952 he graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a master’s degree in education, marking him as one of the first African Americans to be admitted to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He worked as a teacher and school administrator for 40 years in the Prescott, Barnes, Pine Bluff, Townsend Park and Dollarway school districts. After retirement, he was a greeter at Wal-Mart stores in Pine Bluff for nine years. He will be sorely missed by students, friends and family whose lives he touched.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ophelia T. King; two children, George A. King (Barbara), of Memphis, Tenn., and Hope L. King-Walker (Woodson) of Little Rock, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Bethany and Brandon King of Memphis, Tenn.; Yedea Walker, Ajamu Walker (Nucomme), Fwatula Walker-Wright (Don), Ajani Walker and Chike Walker; three great grandchildren: Quentin Walker, Inaja Walker and Olivia Walker and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and cousins.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, November 26, 2010 at Mosaic Church of Central Little Rock, 6420 Colonel Glenn Road. HENSLEY M. “PETE” McKISSACK, 81, of Little Rock, Ark., went to be with the Lord on Monday,November 22, 2010. He was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. He dedicated 42 years of his life to military service, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.After the war he served as a civil engineer with the Air National Guard and was a mentor to many young men in the Guard. In retirement he was an active builder of homes and commercial property; avid gardener giving to the Food Bank and people in the community. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 47 years, Patricia Pierson McKissack; daughter, Cindy McKissack; his parents, Aarin and Frances McKissack; and brother, Ernest McKissack. He is survived by his wife, Merry Lue Wortman McKissack; daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Chris Cutter of Conway; Kim and Tommy Mitchell of Conway; stepdaughters and their husbands, Patty and Bo Griffin; Janice and Terry Womack; brothers, Louie McKisssack and Jerry McKissack all of Little Rock; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

ALEXANDER - Louis M. Crain, 84, of Alexander, died Nov. 22,2010, in Little Rock. He was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Camden, Ark., to the late Clint and Alta Martha (Lampkin) Crain. After attending Chidester High School, he was drafted andserved in the U.S. Army from Dec. 28, 1944, to Nov. 30, 1946, and in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1953. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and of the Baptist faith and a self-employed carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marzelia “Bugs” Crain, four brothers, Calvin, Wallace, Leonard and Orland and one sister, Alieen Stewart. Survivors include two sons, David Crain of Alexander and Bill Cookson, of Sheridan; two daughters, Barbara Tolson (Judd) of Little Rock and Martha Wherry (Carroll) of Greenbrier; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends

BATESVILLE - Ed Ward, 83, of Batesville died Monday, Nov. 22,2010, at White River Medical Center. He was born April 4, 1927, in Strawberry, Ark., the son of Owen C. and Juddie (Bennett) Ward. He had a car business in Flint, Mich., for manyyears. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge No. 23 of Flint, Mich., and Commercial United Travelers. He was an entrepreneur and started many businesses, in Arkansas as well as in Missouri and New Mexico. He was a dreamer, always dreaming new projects up, and was involved in car sales, auto rental, title pawn, and other ventures. He had the exterior of a bit of a rascal over a heart of gold, and he gave to many in need. He was a longtime member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Strawberry and attended Fellowship Baptist Church of Batesville.

He leaves behind his wife and soulmate of 61 years, AlmaL (West) Ward, two daughters, Jeanette Thompson and husband Patrick Thompson, of Batesville, and Sherry Ward of Cave Creek, Ariz., two granddaughters Kimberly Thompson and Tracy Severson and husband Courtney, all of Portland, Ore. He is survived by three brothers, Bill Ward of Bald Knob, Charles Tony Ward of Batesville and Jerry Van Ward of Strawberry; and three sisters, Geraldine Poskey of Strawberry, Clella Bellefeuille (Bob) of Poway, Calif., and Marilyn Adcock (Joe) of Augusta, Ga. He also leaves the beloved family dog, Leroy. He is survived by many employees and friends across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Delores Lepper.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at the chapel at Roller-Crouch Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville. BEEBE - John Bryles Fisher, 70, of Beebe, Ark., died Nov. 23,2010. He was born August 26, 1940, in Beebe to Leta Bryles and John Byron Fisher. John began his career early in life as a home builder and continued in this line of work all his life.He also owned and operated the Beebe Variety Store with his parents for many years. He was the president of Fisher Construction and Rentals for 40 years. John did many things in his lifetime to enhance the growth of Beebe. FAYETTEVILLE - Paul Bayley, age 81, of Fayetteville died Thursday, November 18, 2010, in Springdale. He was a Methodist. He was born April 28, 1929, in Plainview, Texas, to Hubert and Helen Scott. He was a farmer and Research Specialist at the University of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane West Bayley. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his daughter Nancy Simkins and her husband Paul of Fayetteville, Arkansas; stepdaughter, Jan Hudspeth of Ozark, Arkansas; and stepson, Bill Hudspeth and his wife Jennifer of Berryville, Arkansas; one sister, Debra Wittenbach and her husband Stuart of Edmond, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Austin Simkins, Quinn Simkins, Hannah Hudspeth, William Hudspeth and Andrew Hudspeth.
