’Til Next Time Sugar is the sweetest poison

Yes, I’ve had my flu shot; I had the flu a few years ago and sure don’t care to do that again.

After listening to a luncheon-talk at the Adult Wellness Center I was impressed with his definition of metabolism, but by the time I arrived home, I’d forgotten what he said. After looking it up, it’s easy to see that is our body’s regulator. The statement that he made, that I did remember was: Sugar is the sweetest poison there is. Whoa! You are talking to an old lady who craves sweets! Yes, I’ve cut them by 50 percent while working hard at regaining my health. I remember 70 years ago, slipping into the pantry and using a table knife to chip off a corner of the brown sugar brick to suck on. I thought my brother could do no wrong and I’dseen him do that. I know now that Mom surely saw the corners gone and she must have known who and why, but it was never mentioned. The white sugar was kept in a fivegallon lard can to keep mice out and I knew that there was no way I could get that lid off. I never saw powdered sugar until after I was married.

After I plant the spring blooming bulbs every year, I expect a coupleof rains to wipe out the evidence of fresh dug dirt. I have to use a pick ax to loosen the soil, but it doesn’t take an old hen five minutes to turn the bulbs out on top of the ground. This year I’m still waiting on those rains and I go around every day reburying them.

Clint Eastwood had a quote in one of the magazines I read this week. It was: “We are here for a very short time. Do the best you can with it.” Also, I needed the reminder that I got from a magazine that winter solstice is the days with the fewest hours of sunlight.

Brightwater Memorial Church will be serving a Thanksgiving dinner at noon Thursday, Nov. 18.

Mr. and Mrs. Houseworth will be spending the winter at Irving, Texas, close to their children and will be sorely missed.◊◊◊
