— 40 years ago

Pea Ridge Mayor Jack Musteen was re-elected to another four-year term in the 1970 election. His margin of victory over Bill Denman was by only a 43 vote margin, with Musteen gaining 218 votes to Denman’s 175.

The James Whisenhunt family lost their home and its furnishings in a fire of unknown origin. Pea Ridge Fire Chief Harold D. Hurd said the roof of the frame house was caving in when firemen arrived. A drive was underway in Pea Ridge to collect clothing and other household items for the family.

Postmaster Stanley Buttry issued a reminder that postal customers could save money by mailing Christmas packages before Nov. 14.

He said any package mailed before the 14th would save 15 cents on every dollar.

30 years ago

Of the 3,395 persons in Pea Ridge country townships registered to vote, 2,536 voted Tuesday in the general election. Add to that the uncounted total of absentee ballots, and the percentage of registered voters voting exceeded 75 percent.

The results of the Pea Ridge election named newcouncilmen Alva Lee Johnson, Jackie L. Patterson and Charles “Chuck” Colton unopposed. Lee Hall won the race for recorder.

Jimmy Cheek was spotlighted for being in his eighth year as a member of the Pea Ridge High School faculty. He taught eighth-, ninth- and tenth-grade history. He called Pea Ridge “a good place to teach.” 20 years ago

Rogers banker Richard Kimberlin was named president of the Bank of Pea Ridge, replacing Greg Reed. Reed was promoted to president of First Prairie Grove Bank, also owned by Arvest.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawk cheerleaders sponsored a community-wide pep rally,as the Blackhawks prepared to take on Bearden in the opening game of the 1A West District championship.

Counselor Luella Hershberger accepted a check for $1,700 for a grant from Scott Paper Co. Foundation for a new program entitled “Building self esteem.” 10 years ago

The 2000 Fall Festival prince and princess were selected from the Pea Ridge kindergarten, first and second grade classes.

Jacob Hall was crowned prince and Jayce Simer was crowned princess. King and queen were selected from third and fourth grades: John Hall and Jarin Laughlin were crowned.

What had recently been a two-bedroom house at thecorner of Watie Street and Curtis Avenue in Pea Ridge was turned into the office of the only chiropractor in the town, Dr. Delilah Williams. Williams had her own practice open for a little over three weeks. She was formerly partnered with Stateline Chiropractic in southern Missouri.

As part of the community’s 150th birthday celebration, a history book was complied by members of the Pea Ridge Historical Society, including former Mayor Mary Rogers Durand and current Mayor Jackie Crabtree. The book was expected to be between 224-240 pages and contain hundreds of photos. Only a limited number of copies were published.
