Smith’s Training Stables, located on South Curtis Avenue three blocks north of the Sugar Creek Hill descent, was home to Calcutta Creek, a Triple-A race horse for which Smith paid $3,500 when he was weaned and which sired two fillies.

Principal William King submitted his oral resignation to the Pea Ridge School Board at the monthly meeting. He was offered a two-year contract with the school district, but was choosing to leave to pursue his doctorate in secondary education at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Two pee-wee baseball teams for the summer were the Dodgers, coached by Jimmy Howell and sponsored by Webb’s Feed and Seed, and the Cardinals, coached by Dean Lanham and sponsored by White’s Auto Store.

The historic Corinth School house was completely destroyed by a fire, along with a 1979 pickup. Two people were seriously injured. The fire started from an explosion of undetermined origin.

Garfield Church of Christ dedicated a new $104,000 facility. The elders in charge of overseeing the work of the congregation were Richard Hurd, Harry “Chuck”Ruddick and Bill Rothfus. 20 Years Ago

There were 39 Pea Ridge High School seniors to graduate during ceremonies held in the high school gym. Angie Paulsen was valedictorian.

Brenda Chisnell opened the doors of Brenda’s Cafe, which seated 37 customers.

Pea Ridge artists Maxine Lee and Wanda Roe had work submitted into the Walton Arts Center’s time capsule to be opened in 50 years.

Strong winds sent a tree crashing into the home of Bryan and Christy Parmenter on Roland David Roadnortheast of Pea Ridge.

The storm caused power outages throughout the town.

The Pea Ridge Volunteer Fire Department held a benefit car, truck and motorcycle show and auction to raise money for volunteer fire fighter Michael Atteberry who was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The third annual Coal Gap reunion hosted over 80 people at the old school near Lost Bridge.

The school closed in 1952 but the building has been refurbished. Most people who attended the reunion still lived in the area, but some came from as far away as California.
