Democratic Women’s Club to meet

The Benton County Democratic Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 24, at the Bentonville Clarion Hotel.

Chuck Culver, director of Development for University of Arkansas’ Division of Agriculture for the past 20 years, will answer the question “Why should I care about Arkansas agriculture?” Prior to director, Culver was counsel for agriculture and rural development, U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business (1987-1990) and Legislative Assistant for Agriculture, office of the Hon. Dale Bumpers (1982-1987). Culver’s academic history includes a BA degree from LSU, and JD and LLM degrees from the University of Arkansas.

New Meadowbrook Ext. Homemakers Club

President Ione Kauffeld opened the meeting by leading the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Karen Launderville gave the devotions based on second Timothy and “The Gift of Sharing God.” Happiness is based on what you do, not what you say. You can decide ahead of time to be happy and to pass that happiness on, it is an attitude. Old age is a time to withdraw the happy memories you have put into your memory bank of life, so fill your life with many memories.

Rheta Van Doren will give the devotions next month.

Roll call was answered by 14 members telling something or some place in Arkansas they want to visit. Selena Williams led the signing of “Over the Rainbow.”

The minutes were approved as read. Van Doren gave the treasurer’s report.

VAS will serve a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m.

Saturday, May 29, at the Community Center.

A retirement reception is planned May 13 at Garfield Elementary School for Linda Monroe, special education teacher, and Sandy Davis, school secretary. The volunteer coordinator Trish Jenkins is moving to Boston. All three ladies will be sorely missed.

Williams and Mary Ann Bergen, who are both volunteers at God’s Pantry, reported that the congregation at Whitney Mountain Chapel donated the spaghetti and sauce to make complete meals. It was decided that next meeting club members will donate macaroni and cheese or tuna and tuna helper to the pantry.

The Cultural Arts Workshop will be held at 9:30 a.m.

May 20 at the County Building. The project will be tote bags for children and supplies will be on-hand.

Spring council meeting was attended by Kauffeld, Landauer, Launderville, Betty Phillips, Van Doren, Curtistine Woods and Jan Woods.

All wore hats to celebrate the theme of the day. There was a parade of hats and Van Doren won a prize for hers. Also, the card designed by Suzette Davis was chosen to represent the county at the state meeting in June. Entertainment was provided by brother and sister 4-H members and three 4-H scholarship winners were introduced. A speaker from Schmeiding Center spoke on aging, memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Our table centerpiece comprised of a hat box, greenery, a scarf and jewelry designed by Kauffeld and Launderville.

Kauffeld brought rhubarb bars for all to enjoy during the coffee break.

The work day on May 26, the regular meeting day in June and the work day in June will be used to work on the County Fair project. Each of these days will begin at 10 a.m., members should bring sack lunches and plan to work past lunch. Williams showed what the project will look like.

It was suggested that the club take a trip to the Botanical Gardens July 14.

Launderville shared an article which stated that fruit is best eaten on an empty stomach, instead of after a meal.

The meeting was adjourned with the Homemakers’ Pledge.
