40 Years Ago

The employees of the Dempsey Henry company started cutting through the reinforced concrete wall to make a door on the community storm shelter that was in progress for the Pea Ridge community.

By request of a concerned citizen, the Pea Ridge Graphic would, from that point on, refer to Ark. Hwy. 94 by its proper named conferred by the city of Pea Ridge - Curtis Avenue. Some of the newer families were not aware that city streets are named for officers in the Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge.

A total of 82 boys and girls were signed up to play in the Pea Ridge Little League, Babe Ruth and girls’ teams.

John Raines of Garfield took the record for the largest striper caught out of the Lost Bridge Marina of Beaver Lake.

He landed a 38 pound, 4 ounce striper.

The public was invited to the ground-breaking ceremonies held May 16, 1980, for the Pea Ridge branch of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Rogers.

Cliffy Wilkerson was named Mr. Blackhawk in basketball all-district and Andrea McKinney was named Miss Blackhawk in basketball all district at the 1980 Pea Ridge athletic awards dinner.

The Pea Ridge School Board decided to allow teachers two personal days per year, one that would come from sick days and could be accumulated if not used.

Pea Ridge High School junior Doug Blevins was selected to attend the Arkansas Governor’s School at Hendrix College. Blevins was student body president, president of Future Business Leaders of America and president of the junior class.

Pea Ridge City Council authorized Police Chief Sam Holcomb to hire a third policeman for the town. The third patrolman would not be put on city payroll until the following Jan. 1.

High honors graduate Josh Carter was named as the 2000 Pea Ridge High School graduating class’s valedictorian.

Alisha Easter was named salutatorian. Teacher Cheri Fisher presented the commencement address.

The public hearing for Dr. Anita Fervert, principal of Pea Ridge Middle School, was postponed as board members were not able to attend due to the boys’ Blackhawk baseball team being at the state tournament.

Fervert’s hearing would determine her contract renewal.

The sixth Garfield School Reunion was planned for June 16 and 17. Food was provided by Tillman’s Country Market in Garfield.
