40 Years Ago

The sale of Pea Ridge Furniture and Appliance Store brought to Pea Ridge a couple who resided the past 22 years among the Eskimos of northwestern Alaska. Mr. and Mrs.

William Dodd were originally from Oklahoma City, Okla.

Dari Park Drive-in and Elkhorn Gun and Gift Shop were both broken into and burglarized during the night.

All vending machines were damaged at the drive-in, including the jukebox, two pinball machines and a cigarette machine. At the gun shop, the burglars took four guns, a hunting bow, a hand-tooled holster and belt and about $20 worth of ammunition.

Michelle Rene Davis, 4, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Creekmore and great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Creekmore of Pea Ridge, was named the third runner up in the Little Miss Springdale pageant.

Pea Ridge City Council approved a new sewer rate schedule increasing the city’s sewer charges from the present $2.50 per month for single bathroom homes to $4.55 per month for the first 1,000 gallons of water used in a single unit.

The annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by Beta Alpha chapter ESA, was held at Pea Ridge City Park. Each child that attended received candy and had the opportunity to compete for 14 major prizes.

Teams from all over Pea Ridge country were invited to participate in an 18-hour basketball game at Pea Ridge High School to raise funds for the 1979-1980 athletic banquet. Funds were to be raised through sponsorship of the players.

Pea Ridge Postmaster Debbie Anderson said that a number of 1990 Census forms had to be returned to the Census Bureau as undeliverable due to bad addresses.

Pea Ridge council member Dolores Hall and Mayor Mary Rogers were the only ones seeking re-election in the upcoming election. Alderman Joe Hart wasn’t sure if he would seek re-election or run for mayor.

Virgil D. Maybee of Garfield was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in Service Battery 1st Battalion 142nd Field Artillery at Berryville, Ark., Army National Guard.

Beta Alpha Sorority had its 36th birthday party at Dorothy William’s home. Williams is one of the charter members of Beta Alpha. Games were played, balloons with numbers for prizes were popped and the group enjoyed cake with 36 candles on it.

This week’s edition printed four letters to the editor regarding the way middle school principal Anita Frevert was being treated and the possibility of her contract not being renewed. The letters were from parents but also students in seventh and ninth grades.

Pea Ridge angler Larry Walker finished fourth in the EverStart Series Tournament at Beaver Lake. He was one of only 10 non-boaters in the competition, and finished with a weight total of 7-5, winning $2,500.
