40 Years Ago

For someone who said “We started out with one old milk cow,” Grady Hughes built one of the nicest dairy farms around Garfield. The Hughes’ farm was located east of Garfield on Lost Bridge Road.

Mabel Hardy, an elementary teacher in Pea Ridge, was elected the 1970-1971 president of the Pea Ridge PTA. Other officers were Mrs. Larry Hanner, Mrs.

John Escue and Mrs. Delbert Horton.

A coupon for Wal-Mart Discount City advertised 200 sq. feet of Glad wrap for 28 cents and a 30-pack of Pampers for $1.27.

30 Years Ago

Some boys from Bentonville were camping at Ventris. One was injured and taken to the Rogers hospital. A report from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office was that the boys heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot. One boy felt something on his hand, looked down and saw he had been shot. All boys were juveniles except for one 25-year-old. Also involved was a keg and some marijuana.

The fifth grade class at Pea Ridge Elementary School entered a poster contest sponsored by Associated Milk Producers, Inc. Winners were Martin Lammey, Lisa Larsen and Christi Collins in first, second and third, respectively.

The Fitness Center in downtown Pea Ridge, across from the Post Office, was offering ladies’ fitness classes in the late afternoons with limited enrollment and children’s’ gymnastics classes.

20 Years Ago

Secretary of the Pea Ridge United Fund Frieda Crabtree expected the new organization to be fully operational by that fall. Several non-profit agencies achieved or were in the process of achieving tax exempt status to qualify to receive United Fund money.

Pea Ridge resident Wanda Roe attended a meeting in Little Rock to help select students for the 1990 Governor’s School. Roeworked with the visual arts selection committee.

Gene Holt was pictured representing the New Meadowbrook Extension Homemakers Club. She presented a quilt to Nadine Groves of Garfield. Members of the club made a quilt and gave it away as a fundraiser.

10 Years Ago

An extensive search and rescue operation that involved law enforcement agencies from both Arkansas and Missouri resulted in the safe return of two young Benton County boys. The two boys, 5-year-old Daniel Torres and 4-year-old Roy Eastrellon, apparently walked away from their home north of Garfield sometime aroundnoon. Nearly 4 1/2 hours passed before the Benton County Sheriff’s Office was called. After even horseback patrols were dispatched, the boys were finally located a short distance east of Garfield. The boys were said to be unharmed, “just very hungry.”

Army 2nd Lt. Brian R. Easley graduated from the Army ordnance officer basic course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md. Easley was a platoon leader with the 325th Forward Support Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. He is a 1995 graduate of Pea Ridge High School and a 1999 graduate of the U.S.
