Pea Ridge city elections 2010

— This November, three municipal seats in Pea Ridge are to be considered.

The mayor’s seat, currently held by Jackie Crabtree, and two City Council positions - ward 1, position 2, currently held by Bob Cottingham, and ward 2, position 2, currently held by Nadine Telgemeier.

Municipal filing dates begin Aug. 4 and close at noon Aug. 24.

To be eligible to file, a candidate must be a qualified elector, a resident of the city and a minimum of 18 years of age. The candidate must never have been convicted of a felony, or convicted of embezzlement of public money, bribery, forgery or any other crime involving dishonesty, including misdemeanors. The candidate must not claim theright to vote in any other state and must not be judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.

According to Benton County Clerk Tena O’Brien, each candidate is required to sign a politicalpractices pledge, stating he is familiar with the requirements of the Arkansas Constitution in order to run for elected office. Thisform is required at the time of filing.

The candidate should obtain a petition to file from the City Clerk. In Pea Ridge, a second class city defined by a population of more than 500 but less than 2,500 residents, 10 signatures are required in order to have a name added to the ballot in the GeneralElection set for Nov. 2. In the event of a run-off, the second election is set for Nov. 23.

The signatures on the petition will be checked by county officials to ensure the signers are all qualified electors.

Elected officials will take office Jan. 1, 2011.

WHO CAN VOTE?

To be eligible to register to vote, a person must meet the following qualifications:

◊U.S. citizen;

◊Resident of Arkansas;

◊At least 18 years of age by the date of election;

◊Never convicted of a felony that has not been discharged or pardoned;

◊Not presently judged mentally incompetent by a court; and

◊Not claim the right to vote elsewhere.

To register to vote, qualified Arkansas residents can present a valid Arkansas driver’s license or photo identification, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document showing name and address, to the County Clerk’s office in person or to the Department of Motor Vehicles located at 2308 SE 28th St. in Bentonville.
