Fifty-four votes were cast for Jack Lasater, who was the only candidate seeking a place on the Pea Ridge School Board. Lasater, who sought re-election, had been appointed to the board previously to fill the unexpired term of Lee Otis Hall, who resigned.

Mrs. Charles (Bonnie) Johnson of Pea Ridge, census crew leader for district 16, announced there was a shortage of enumerators in Pea Ridge. The census was scheduled to start April 1 and take five to six weeks to complete.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cheek of Cotter announced the birth of a daughter, Lori Michele, on March 16 at Baxter General Hospital in Mountain Home.

Jim Roe, Pea Ridge basketball coach, received the honor of coach of the year for the second year children are invited for this time of fellowship and activities. On-campus child and preschool activities are available.

Women’s Bible Study is held on Tuesday from 9:30 - 11 am.

Jr. & Sr. High Blend also meets on this night from 6 - 7:30 p.m. All 7th - 12th Graders are welcome.

Applications for enrollment are now being taken for a Lil’ Sprouts Preschool, which will open on August 23 at Bella Vista Christian Church. Classes are forming for 3 years olds and 4 - 5 years olds.

The oldest member of the Shady Grove Community Club was Mrs. Artie Hickman, 82. She was a charter member of the club, being one of the original 16 who formed the club in 1947.

The rezoning of a parcel of land from agricultural to commercial as requested by First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Rogers to permit the location of a branch in Pea Ridge was approved by the City Council.

Pea Ridge Junior High School gifted and talented class, led by Nancy Campbell-Sharp, placed third inthe regional Odyssey of the Mind competition. They would have placed first, were it not for a penalty received for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Former Wal-Mart executive Jack Shewmaker was the headline speaker for the April 7 Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce annual meeting.

The Pea Ridge City Council eliminated the town marshal position and the system, and put in its place a police department.

Former Marshal Sam Holcomb became the city’s chief of police.

The smoke and thunder of artillery rising above Pea Ridge National Military Park weren’t echoesfrom the 1862 battle, they were part of a re-enactment staged for filming of a new orientation movie for the park. The film was to replace an old slide presentation shown in the auditorium of the park visitor’s center.

New speed limits signs on Lee Town Road heading east from Pea Ridge indicated 45 mph instead of 55 mph, as they had the week before. The new 45 mph limit extended to the intersection with Ark. Hwy. 72.

Pea Ridge High School first year fast-pitch softball team reached a team milestone that Friday night when the girls earned their first fast-pitch victory, a 10-9 extra innings win over Springdale.
