New calendar set

— School on Saturday will probably not be attempted again, according to Pea Ridge superintendent Mike Van Dyke.

Pea Ridge Schools were in session Saturday, March 6, in an effort to make up days lost due to inclement weather this school year.

“It worked, attendance was 60-65 percent, but I’m glad it’s over with,” Van Dyke said.

Bonnie Fullmer, curriculum director, presented the board with a proposed 2010-2011 school calendar. She said while adjusting the calendar, she tried to incorporate requests from the Personnel Policy Committee, staff and faculty. It was agreed that one day between the six in-service days and the return of students from summer break would be beneficial.

By law, two days of parent/ teacher conferences are required throughout the year. Next year, these days will both be Tuesdays, one in October and one in February, with no student attendance.

One half of the day will be professional development with the other half reserved for conferences from noon to 6 p.m.

Students will get three days vacation during the week of Thanksgiving, as opposed to the previous five.

In the event of abundant absences due to snow days, eight days are added into the calendar as make-up days.

The last day of school is set for May 25, 2011. Make-up days one and two will be May 26 and 27.

The dates of spring break are state mandated, according to Fullmer. In the 2011 spring semester, the first two days of this week, March 21 and 22, will be reserved for make-up days numbers three and four if needed.

This schedule allows students to be released for summer break before Memorial Day. In the event of greater than four days missed, make-up days will then be added to the end of May and first of June, beginning May 31.

The proposed calendar was accepted by the board and will go to the PPC for approval.
