School calendar adjusted

Excessive snow days this school year prompted a change in the calendar for the 2010-2011 year, allotting two spring break days as make-up days if needed in an effort to end the school year before June.

“June is not a popular time to have school,” Mike Van Dyke, school superintendent. said at the regular monthly school boardmeeting Monday night.

The Personnel Policy Committee will wait until April to see if adjustments to the district’s bereavement policy will be approved by the board.

Sarah Shannon and Val Colburn presented a request to add to the certified and non-certified personnel bereavement policies by extending the list of approvedfamily members. Colburn, representing non-certified personnel, also requested to change the number of bereavement days allowed from two to five.

Both wanted to also add to the policy a request that personnel present an obituary or funeral program in the event of absence due to bereavement. This addition, however, was omittedfrom the copy supplied in the board members’ packet.

Since the correct, updated version of the requested change was not given in advance for review, the issue was tabled until April.

In other business, the board:

◊Approved the consent agenda, including the financial report and a requested leave of absence;

◊ Discussed considering restructuring non-certified staff in a future meeting; and

◊Accepted resignations from Stacey Childress and Lacey Parks, and terminated custodian Monte Holt;

◊Considered the renewal of certified teacher contracts for the 2010-2011 school year.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 12.
