Sports Spotlight - Matt Easterling

8th grade history teacher, assistant senior high football coach and assistant baseball coach

— What is your job title? Eighth-grade history teacher, assistant high school football coach and assistant baseball coach.

How does coaching football differ from coaching baseball? Being the assistant baseball coach is more physically exhausting, we play more games per week and practice six out of seven days a week. With football, it’s more mentally exhausting because we are constantly scheming and coming up with game plans.

Where are you originally from? Pea Ridge.

How long have you been teaching in Pea Ridge?

This is my fifth year.

Where did you go to college? Williams Baptist College.

What’s your degree in? Physical Education with a minor in History.

What was your first job ever? Working at Jac’s Ranch mowing lawns.

What was your first job out of college? The head baseball, head softball and head junior high football coach at East Newton High School in Missouri.

Did you play sports in high school and/or college? Yes, I played football and baseball in high school and baseball in college.

How has Pea Ridge changed since you’ve lived here? It’s a lot bigger. When I was (in school), this was all pasture land. Downtown a lot of stores and housing (here now) didn’t exist. There were 46 kids in my class, you knew everybody.

What do you think about the upcoming baseball season? It’s gonna be interesting, we have a good core group of kids. Getting a late start early on will be rough on us, we’ve only had three actual practices and seven out of nine starters were on the basketball team. They’ve had very limited throwing and hitting practice. But I think we’re going to be a competitive team.
