Decco gets job

— Decco Contractors of Rogers said the proposal for the asphalt hot-mix overlay for the streets of Pea Ridge was the best prepared proposal they have ever bid on, said engineer M.J. Hensley.

Decco won the bid for the project with a price of $169.568.60, after bidding a lower price than both Tomlinson Asphalt of Fayetteville, $236,620.75, and Hutchens Construction of Cassville, $208,051.75.

“(The price) is considerably lower than I estimated,” Hensley said.

Hensley originally estimated the cost of the asphalt to be $85 per ton of mix; Decco bid $50.30 per ton. Hensley attributed the lower amount to the price of gasoline. A unit price for asphalt is published by the Arkansas Highway Department and fluctuates with the price of gasoline. Hensley expects the price to only get lower.

“We did it at the right time,” he said.

Decco will also recycle the old asphalt back into a hot mix to be used again.

The contract permits the city to add or subtract asphalt overlay from it as needed, for instance if another street is added to the project. The price will be adjusted accordingly, and Hensley said the city will only pay for what is “completed, measured and accepted by us.”

Decco did the overlay for both Givens and Creekwood Manor subdivisions in Pea Ridge.
