— Pea Ridge Historical Society

The Pea Ridge Historical Society met June 22 at the museum.

Nancy (Patton) Jordan gave a presentation on the Patton Family. The first recorded Pattons lived in England in 1270. In 1590 they were recorded in Scotland and in 1627 in Ireland.

In 1745 John Hanse Patton, born in Ireland, and his wife Mary Elizabeth Wallace, born in Scotland, were in York County, Penn., which is now Adams County, Penn. They were the parents of five children. The third child, Robert Wyatt Patton, born in 1750 in York County and died in 1815 in Knox County, Tenn., was the Pea Ridge Pattons’ ancestor.

Robert had 13 children, one of whom was Isaac N.

Patton. Isaac Patton died in Tennessee in 1842. His widow, Ann Boyd Porter Patton, and their five children came to Arkansas in 1860 and settled on land that is now in the Pea Ridge National Military Park. Their son, James M. Patton (Nancy Jordan’s great-grandfather) stayed on the farm. His wife was Harriett Patterson Patton. There are many family members still in the area.

The meeting was opened at 6:50 p.m. by president Mary Durand. Gus Bradley gave the treasurer’s report.

Jerry Nichols proposed a trip to the Shiloh Museum in Springdale on July 17. The Pea Ridge Historical Society was open from 7 to 9 p.m. July 7-10 during the Pea Ridge Fair. There was no regular meeting the fourth Tuesday in July.

The Aug. 24 meeting will be held at the Methodist Church on Davis Street due to the heat.

J.W. Jordan made a motion that up to $50 be spent for decorations to be used during the fair. Durand announced that Historical Society dues of $10 per person are due in July. Nichols made a motion that a check-out system be put in place so that anyone can tell when items have temporarily been removed from the museum. J.W. Jordan offered to provide a book for that purpose.

Anyone interested in the history of the Pea Ridge area is welcome to attend the meeting at 6 p.m. Aug.

24, in the Methodist Church on Davis Street.
