Benton County Democrats to meet

— Benton County Democrats, formerly the Benton County Democratic Women’s Club, will meet at 11:30 a.m.

Monday, July 26, at the Bentonville Clarion Inn for its monthly buffet luncheon. This will be the first meeting after the bylaw change admitting men as full members and changing the organization’s name to reflect this inclusion.

Attorney Hadley Hindmarsh will address the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a corporation’s political speech cannot be regulated simply because it is a corporation and not an individual person. Discussing whether this ruling applies to labor unions and how the ruling will affect political financing in the short and long runs are among the many good questions already being debated since this June 22 ruling. She will focus her comments on the legal basis offered by Justice Kennedy for this five-four majority decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, and by Justice Stevens for the minority dissent.

Hindmarsh, a native Arkansan, received a law degree from University of Arkansas School of Law in 2007 and practices with the Rogers’ law firm of Keith, Miller, Butler, Schneider and Pawlik, PLLC. She is also a past-president of the BCDWC.

Reservations for the buffet ($12) can be made by calling 271-8335 or e-mailing [email protected].

The public is invited.
