After an inspection and evaluation by M.H. Benton, school plant supervisor for the Arkansas Department of Education, Benton stated the high school needed additional space and modernization of the existing facilities.

The Pea Ridge City Council voted to install two street lights, one near the intersection of the community storm shelter on Davis Street and another on Carden Road, where a resident requested a light. The council also approved the purchase of a $10-$15 fan to help pull air from City Hall into the council room for meetings.

A second spotted mule was born at the Mahurins in Garfield. The first spotted mule born the year before to Dolly attracted people by the dozens. The second, born to Dolly’s half-sister Ribbon a year later, showed two stockinged back legs and one stockingedfront foot. Dolly was due to present another mule that summer, but the newborn was black as tar from head to heels.

Charges of “rip-off,” “unfairand unequitable,” “we’re being had” and other unprintable comments were thrown at the Pea Ridge City Council when a large group of citizens complaining about the heavy increase in water and sewer rates showed up.

In the editorial, the editor thanked Pea Ridge residents for support of the fair that year. There were three and four generations of some families participating, but also new Pea Ridgers, fitting right in and being made welcome in a Pea Ridge country way that “doesn’t leave a stranger feeling strange very long.” The strong sense of community Pea Ridge offers was said to be a “priceless quality of life” this area offers.

Fifty-five ContinentalTelephone subscribers turned out at the quarterly meeting of the Pea Ridge Chamber of Commerce to find out if there was a possibility of eliminating the toll charge between Pea Ridge and Rogers and Bentonville. A three-member committee was formed to evaluate how to proceed.

Garfield city officials were told by the Arkansas Department of Health they had to hire a plumbing inspector.

Regardless of how small in incorporated town was, there was a new law stating every town had to have a plumbing inspector.

Three Pea Ridge High School athletes attended basketball camp at College of the Ozarks. Pictured with C of O head coach Al Walker were John Hicks, Clay Reed andMike Denman. Denman won a trophy for first place in the one-on-one contest for 11th and 12th graders.

Pea Ridge school superintendent Roy Norvell announced that Matt Scantling, assistant high school football and junior high track coach and advanced placement high school English teacher, resigned his position at Pea Ridge schools.

At Pea Ridge florist’s watermelon seed spitting contest, the Landis family showed their winning form by winning three age level divisions.

Kristen Landis, Eric Landis and Tammy Landis all spit seeds the farthest in their age groups. Alex Kelly won the prize for the seventh through 12th grade division.
