40 years ago - What was believed to have been a boa constrictor snake that may have escaped from the carnival in Pea Ridge during the recent Pea Ridge Community Fair was killed at a home near the site of the carnival after the fair was over. Mrs. Nelms’ daughterin-law arrived at the house to find the six-foot snake curled up in the chair on the front porch.

The State GOP Convention is over. The big controversy was the acceptance of the party platform. The leadership moved to accept the platform without giving the delegates a chance to read it. Motions like that required a two-thirds majority, but it was the leadership who was counting the votes.

Big, fat mama kitty jumped up in the porch swing and walked right over across my lap. She put her nose up against my cheek and then rubbed the entire length of her under-chin on me. I read one time that animals are marking with their scent glands, but to me it’s an act of pure affection. She also does that kneading action with her front paws and does that deep-down purring in her throat.

In a ruling that may eventually reverberate from coast to coast concerning the status of cheerleading as a sport in America, a federal judge in Connecticut has ruled that cheerleading is not an official sport. At least not when schools are trying to figure their adherence to Title IX provisions, a federal law that weighs mightily when schools go about organizing sporting programs for their students.

Several days ago we took a drive out to Jacket, Mo., which is just over the Missouri line, a mile north from the farm where I grew up. On the way back to Pea Ridge, coming past the old Taylor place, not far from the Pea Ridge City Park, I noticed a road sign saying “Speed Zone Ahead.” This is on Hayden Road, otherwise known as Arkansas Hwy. 265, or to old-timers like me, the old Jacket Road.

Summertime for youth pastors is usually the busiest part of the year. I really look forward to spending a week at youth camp and going on mission trips, and whatever else comes up during this time. Last week I had the privilege, and I do believe it is a privilege, to spend a week with a group of students and sponsor from my church. This was my first time to take them to camp and I was a little nervous about the trip, but it didn’t take long for our group to gel together and we had a blast.

My last two columns have been about how we can protect ourselves from some of the terrible economic consequences that are beginning to fall on this nation because of the foolishness and corruption of our ruling class — from both parties. The technical name for what’s coming is stagflation. Prices will rise, but incomes will not keep pace. While a few wellconnected looters at the top will become obscenely rich, the middle and working classes will be all but destroyed. I don’t need a time machine to know this, just a history book. This is what has happened to every nation which conducted its financial affairs the way ours are being conducted. In fact, these things have already begun to happen.

40 years ago Extreme high temperatures and high humidity was blamed for the death of 1,855 turkeys in the area that would have gone to market that night. The turkeys were owned by Webb’s Feed and Seed and pastured on the Carroll Jones farm northeast of Pea Ridge.

Carmen and John have grown children and Elaine is a grandma. Bill and Betty are the reason that the intersection of Highways 62 and 72 is still known as Codling Corner to the locals.

Several years ago we made a trip to the garden center in Bentonville and brought home a number of settings of thornless blackberries and some raspberry bushes. They have thrived.

Winning spirit brings tourney to town

Cheers from fans from across the region raised throughout the weekend at the baseball fields on Weston Street as 13 T-ball teams of 5- and 6-year-old T-ball players faced off in the state tournament eventually won by Van Buren Gray against Bentonville White in the final game. Intense sunshine was punctuated with showers. Rain Saturday didn’t dampen the spirits of the players and fans, but did postpone some games until Sunday. Action began Friday and culminated with the presentation of trophies Monday afternoon.

Pea Ridge Babe Ruth Banksters end successful season

Considered among the darkest of horses heading into the 2010 Babe Ruth Baseball seasons, the Pea Ridge Community Bank diamond boys confounded the experts, fighting their way into the Babe Ruth Northwest Regional Tournament semi-finals before bowing out to the regular season champion Springdale team last week.

Elementary art work to hang in Gilcrease

Art work by 52 Pea Ridge Primary and Intermediate art students will be displayed in a month long art exhibition at the Gilcrease Museum of American Art in Tulsa, Okla.
