— 40 Years Ago

The Jan. 29 issue was the first ever edition to include the monthly northeast Benton County Farm and Country edition. The special section was scheduled to be a regular part of the Pea Ridge Graphic on the last Thursday of the month.

Jack Lasater was seeking re-election to the Pea Ridge School Board in the March 10 election. He was uncontested since he was the only candidate to file before the deadline the previous Friday.

30 Years Ago

Four citizens of Pea Ridge filed as candidates for the boards of education of the Pea Ridge and Rogers school districts. Kenneth L. Patterson and Jerry C. (J.C.) Beaver filed for Pea Ridge and Janet Lillian Proper Simrell and Ron Crabb of Garfield filed for Rogers.

Over 70 accidents were reported in northwest Arkansas as a result of the icy film that covered the area’s highways and streets. Pea Ridge Police Chief Loyd Pifer reported that Pea Ridge was fortunate, however, in that not a single accident was reported or investigated.

Pea Ridge Ambulance had a new staffing plan that began with Janet Spivey of Sisco Funeral Home making one phone call that rang to 20 people who volunteered for the ambulance.

Coach Kevin Miller was hired for the remainder of the school year to serve in the position of dean of students/assistant principal at Pea Ridge High School.

John King taught the two health classes Miller gave up for the position. Miller said he took the position to see the discipline improve.

A Bentonville fire truck joined other area fire departments in battling a grass fire that burned several hundred acres north of Pea Ridge and just east of Ark. Hwy. 94. Several farms were involved and the bee hives of one farmer were destroyed.

Over six inches of snow fell on Thursday afternoon, causing school closings, cancellations and traffic problems.

Eric White, BriannaWright and Terrie Sue Wilkerson placed first, second and third, respectively, in the community essay contest for middle school students sponsored by the Pea Ridge Sesquicentennial Committee. The topic of the essay was about the students’ community.

Lacie Bray of Pea Ridge was one of the 84 students who were named to the Dean’s List at Lyon College for the fall 1999 semester, maintaining a G.P.A. of 3.75 or higher.
