––––– • –––––WINIFRED MURRAY THOMPSON YETTER of Little Rock died Sunday, January 24, 2010. She was born October 7, 1931, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Miles M. “Bob” Yetter, USMC-Retired, her parents Roy and Eleanore Thompson, and brothers, Richard and Michael Lawrence Thompson. She is survived by her children, Diane Lynn Morgan (Larry) of Paron, Ark., Robert Bryce Yetter and Jacqueline Ann Johnson (Michael), of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Haley Eleanor Yetter, Katharine Grace Johnson and Michael Jacob Johnson; her sister, Carole Ann Tinnel (Michael); her brothers, James P. Thompson (Marian) of Shoreline, Wash., Thomas E. Thompson (Vona) of Thornburg, Ark., and George G. Thompson (Brenda) of Little Rock. Also survived by many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Win was a lifelong resident of Little Rock except for “tours of duty” at Camp Lejune, North Carolina and Twentynine Palms, California. Winifred graduated from Mount St. Mary Academy in 1949. In 1952 she obtained her RN Diploma in Nursing from St. Vincent’s Infirmary School. She later completed her formal education as a member of the first graduating class of Nurse Anesthesia from St. Vincent’s Infirmary, Little Rock, Ark., (designing the school pin). Winifred was among the first nurses to obtain national certification and use the initials CRNA. Yetter, as she was known at UAMS, worked for 46 years, retiring in 2008. She was known for her professionalism, determination and compassionate care. While work was an important part of her life, it was not all consuming. She proceeded to raise and nurture three children who adored and admired her and wanted to become the person that she was. There are numerous people who knew Winifred as “Mom” and always tried to keep up with her. She enjoyed most sports, from bowling to Robert’s early baseball days, to Jackie’s competition swimming. Win once drove to Dallas, Texas, because she thought Diane had left the mouthpiece to her baritone horn in Little Rock that she needed for a concert. After arriving in Dallas, Win was informed by Diane that it was her spare mouthpiece. In the early 50’s, Win attended her first Razorback game, standing in the sidelines with a patient from the VA Hospital. She was hooked. Attending games, bowl games, and Southwest conference basketball championships, she remained a avid fan until this last year, when her illness took a toll on her energy and drive. Winifred had enjoyed bowling for many years and was a member of the “old” Roosevelt Mixed League (VA Hospital) and various city women’s leagues. As a nurse, Winifred served several terms as the secretary for the Arkansas Nurse Anesthesia Association. Winifred was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, in Little Rock, where she attended grade school. She loved animals and was known to have rescued a few. She had her cat, Willoughby, for many years, who she found on the UAMS parking deck, and Duchess, a golden retriever who was hit by a car and rescued by fellow UAMS worker, Graylon Cooper. Her charities are too numerous to mention and her generosity was unbounded.

In lieu of flowers, please consider St. Edward Building Fund, St. Edward Catholic Church, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, (800) 397-7585 (www.marineheritage.org), St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlain, S.D., (www. stjo.org) and www.DogsOnly.org or P.O. Box 251412, Little Rock, Ark. 72225.

Our Loss is Heaven’s Gain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Edward Catholic Church, 801 Sherman St., Little Rock on Friday, January 29, 2010, at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers are Thomas E. Thompson, George G. Thompson, Alan Porbeck, Danny Phillips, John Murphee and Graylon Cooper.
