Horace Knox, the minister at the Free Will Baptist church in Pea Ridge, declared that he would seek the county judges’ office in the upcoming election.

Knox, a lifelong resident of Benton County, ran on the Democratic ticket.

Pea Ridge Elementary School received a tentative rating of B, according to superintendent Andrew Widener. That made the first time in several years the elementary school rose above a C-rating.

The year 1970 was an election year for all city council positions. The current mayor, Jack Musteen, did not intend to run for re-election. other open positions were city recorder and four city alderman.

Mable Hardy, Judy Wilkerson, Penny Wimmer and Merlene Dryden were pictured swearing in as the new Pea Ridge Library Board.

Larry Morgan, McDonald County, Mo., school bus driver, was shot in the leg by a man using a .357 Magnum handgun. Jim Garner was arrested and released on bond. The incident was still under investigation. It was reported that both bones in the calf of Morgan’s leg were shattered.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jerry Putman of Little Flock announced the engagement of their daughter, Teresa Ann, to Gary Hufford, the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Georald Hufford of Bentonville. The bride is a 1975 graduate of Rogers High School and was employed as a computer operator at Wal-Mart Data Processing Center.

After advertising in early November 1989, for bids for city attorney, the Pea Ridge City Council agreed to hire Howard Slinkard, after a tie-breaking vote from Mayor Mary Rogers. The city also voted to hire Rogers attorney Terry Crabtree as prosecuting attorney.

The parents of half of the Pea Ridge High School senior class were notified by certified mail that their children might not graduate because of bad grades, according to superintendent Marvin Higginbottom. he also began steps to eliminate unacceptable discipline problems in the junior and senior high schools.

A new Jacket, Mo., bridge across Sugar Creek was nearer reality than most people thought. The existing one-lane bridge was 60 years old and because of the 90 degree turn at the approach, trucks of any significant size or length were unable to use it.

An aerial photo of a portion of the 80 acres proposed as an industrial park for Pea Ridge showed land east of city limits. The land was being considered for purchase by SWEPCO.

Wanda Roe posed with her painting of autumn leaves that hung in Osage Terrace senior apartments in Bentonville. She was a special guest at the grand opening of the apartments.

At the Jan. 18 meeting, Pea Ridge City Council authorized the local ambulance service to advertise for bids to purchase a new ambulance to replace the current 1986 model. The ambulance service had been setting aside funds for several years for that purpose.
