— 40 Years Ago

Mayor Jack Musteen was notified the Pea Ridge fire insurance rates were reduced, by a letter from Carl Smalley of the Division of Engineering, Arkansas Inspection and Rating Bureau. The reduction in rate class provided a considerable savings to the residents and property owners who had fire insurance.

Fred McKinney was appointed Pea Ridge city recorder at the City Council meeting to complete the unfilled term of Alva Lee Johnson. McKinney was also president of the Chamber of Commerce.

A delegation of interested young Pea Ridge men attended the Pea Ridge City Council meeting to formally protest the anticipated action of the council on the proposed tax reappraisal. Serving as spokesperson for the group was Bill Denman, owner of Bill’s Citgo Service. With him were Don McCrary and Evan McCool.

30 Years Ago

Something new was rising on the landscape in Pea Ridge country at the intersection of U.S. Highway 62 and Arkansas Highway 72.

The foundation of the beginnings of the newest cafe was beside the Battlefield Inn Motel, owned by Mr.

and Mrs. Bill Codling.

Marine Private Dennis R. Shackelford, son of Mazie and Kenneth C. Shackelford of Seligman, Mo., waspromoted to while serving with the 3rd Force Service Support Group on Okinawa. Shackelford joined the Marine Corps in May 1979.

Marcie Cothran and Elizabeth King held a baby shower in the basement of the First Baptist Church for Jackie Collins. All friends were invited.

Postal Inspector Charles Gholson said the shipment of drugs through the mail was occurring more frequently. A Bentonville couple was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance after 50 pounds of marijuana, packaged and boxed, was mailed to the Pea Ridge Post Office, where it was picked up by another suspect in the case.

The Volunteer Ambulance Service of northeast Benton County asked resident of Avoca and surrounding areas to attend a public discussion. The ambulance service was without drivers from 6 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A Pea Ridge man announced the foundation of a new business, Wright’s Wash-About. Owner Jackie Wright said his high-pressure cleaning system would wash “virtually anything you want to wash ... siding on houses, trailer houses, chicken houses, farm equipment, trucks, etc.”

At the cost of $67,865, the Pea Ridge City Councilpurchased a new ambulance from Emergency Services Supply. The council also agreed to advertise for bids for a new police car.

The Garfield Planning Commission approved a scaled down version of the sign Arvest Bank wanted to place in of the old post office building advertising the drive through ATM.

On the page commemorating 150 years of historical Pea Ridge, the Pea Ridge High School class of 1946 was pictured with its 13 graduates, including Martha Wilkerson, Joyce Patterson, Verl Thompson, Nedra Mc-Ginnis, J.C. Evans, R.C. Miller, Jack Patterson, Bonnie Hall, Kathleen Hall, Virgie Mitchell, Julia Hall, Mary Lou Webb and Eva Miser.
