AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS

R. Preston Woodruff, Jr. Scholarship

◊Eligibility: Arkansas resident planning to attend in-state or out-of-state post-secondary school; high school senior, current college student or plan to be enrolled in a postsecondary institution for the following fall/spring academic year; and must be enrolling on at least a halftime basis.

◊Deadline: April 1. No late entries will be accepted..

◊All winners are required to submit a typed 500-word essay to remain eligible for the $1000 scholarship. An essay packet will be sent to the recipients containing the essay topic, guidelines, judging criteriaand deadline for returning the completed essay. One renewable scholarship will be given to the student with the most outstanding essay. The renewable scholarship recipient must maintain satisfactory academic progress, determined by the institution.

Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship

◊Available to all Arkansans regardless of race, gender, family income or course of study. Scholarships will be awarded starting with the Fall 2010 semester, then will be awarded annually. Amount will be determined by lottery proceeds, and will be announced in 2010.

◊Eligibility: Traditional students - Arkansas resident and U.S. citizen/lawful permanent resident; accepted for admission at an approved institution of higher education as a fulltime student in a program of study that leads to a baccalaureate degree, associate degree, qualified certificate or a nursing school diploma; applicant must complete the FAFSA (although there will be no maximum income cap); applicant must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Graduate from an Arkansas public high school and successfully complete the Smart Core curriculum established by the Arkansas Department of Education and either achieve at least a 2.5 GPA or a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent.

2. Graduate from an Arkansas public high school before the 2013-2014 school year, but did not complete the Smart Core curriculum, shall achieve at least a 2.5 high school GPA; and either achieve a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent or score proficient or higher on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments, including without limitation, end-of-course assessments on Algebra I, Geometry and Biology;

3. Applicant who qualifies under #1 or #2, but graduates from an Arkansas public high school that is annually identified in the report by the Arkansas Department of Education as a school in which 20 percent or more of the students received a letter grade of “B” or higher but did not score proficiency or higher on the end-of-course assessment on the first attempt and achieve at least a 2.5 high school GPA; and either achieve a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent; or score proficient or higher on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments, including withoutlimitation, end-of-course assessments on Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and Literacy, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

4. Applicant who has a disability identified under the Individuals with Disabilities Act, 20 U.S.C. § 1400 et seq., as it existed on July 1, 2009 and graduates from an Arkansas public high school but did not complete the Smart Core curriculum because the applicant’s individualized education program under § 6-41-217 did not require it, shall achieve at least a 2.5 high school GPA; and either achieve a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent; or score proficient or higher on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments, including without limitation, end-of-course assessments on Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and Literacy, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

5. Graduate from a private or out-of-state or home school high school and achieve a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent

◊Nontraditional Students - Arkansas resident and US citizen/lawful permanent resident; accepted for admission at an approved institution of higher education as a fulltime or part-time student in a program of study thatleads to a baccalaureate degree, associate degree, qualified certificate or a nursing school diploma;

must complete the FAFSA (although there will be no maximum income cap) and must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Graduated from an Arkansas high school and achieved a 2.5 high school grade point average or had a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent; or

2. Has completed at least 12 semester hours of courses granting three or more hours of credit at an approved institution of higher education and earned a postsecondary grade point average of at least 2.5; or

3. Graduated from a private, out-of-state or home school high school and achieve a minimum composite score of 19 on the ACT or the equivalent score on an ACT equivalent.

New Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship

◊Eligibility: High school seniors and non-traditional students that are Arkansas residents; have completed the Smart Core Curriculum with an overall GPA of at least 2.5, or a composite of 19 on the ACT (or equivalent); have not completed the Smart Core Curriculum, but have an over-all GPA of at least2.5 AND composite of at least 19 on the ACT (or equivalent) OR a score of proficient or higher on the end-of-course exams;

non-traditional students who graduated from an Arkansas public high school must have a high school GPA of at least 2.5 OR a composite of at least 19 on the ACT (or equivalent) OR must have completed at least 12 college semester hours with a college GPA of at least 2.5; high school seniors and non-traditional students who did not graduate from an Arkansas public high school must have a composite of at least 19 on the ACT (or equivalent) and applicants must submit the FAFSA.

◊Deadline: June 1 and November 1.

Arkansas Governor’s Scholars Program

◊Eligibility: High school senior with a 27 ACT or a 1120 SAT or a 3.5 GPA and Arkansas resident (32 ACT or 1410 SAT and a 3.5 GPA in academic courses, or National Merit and National Achievement Finalist are eligible to be Governor’s Distinguished Scholars).

◊Governor’s Scholars - $4,000 annually, Governor’s Distinguished Scholars - up to $10,000 annually.

◊Deadline: February 1.

GO! Opportunities Grant

◊Eligibility: Based on the family’s adjusted gross income as reported on theFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien; Arkansas resident for the 12 months prior to application for the grant;

and enrolled in an eligible Arkansas institution.

◊Deadline: June 1 and November 1. Students apply by completing the FAFSA and the ADHE HEOG application available on this web site.

◊The annual award amount is $1000 for full time students and $500 for part time students. For the HEOG program, full time is defined 12 semester credit hours for the fall term freshman year and 15 semester credit hours thereafter. Part time is defined as less than full-time but at least 6 semester credit hours.

In addition to meeting grade point average and semester credit hour requirements, students must complete the FAFSA each year and demonstrate that they continue to meet the income eligibility requirements

Law Enforcement Officers’ Dependents Scholarship (LEO)

Waiver of tuition, fees and room at any public college, university, or technical institute in Arkansas for dependents and spouses of Arkansas law enforcement officers, some Highway and Transportation Department employees and other public employees, who were killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

◊Eligibility: Undergraduate who is a dependent child (under 23 years of age) or spouse of persons killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty as an Arkansas law enforcement officer, fire fighter, forester, correctional officer and Community Punishment Department or Transportation Department employees. (Note: Spouses who have remarried are not eligible.) Must be Arkansas resident.

Waiver of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, and on campus room. Approved Arkansas public college, university or technical school only
