Historic downtown buildings abundant with treasures

— Flea Market Plus at the corner of West Pickens Road and North Curtis Avenue in Pea Ridge opened Sept. 1 and business has been booming ever since.

The building housing the flea market is actually seven buildings in the heart of the historic downtown district. Over the past eight decades, the buildings have housed numerous businesses including a hardware store, a grocery store, a cafe, a barber shop and the post office.

“It’s a great location, location is everything,” said Angela Canard, one of the business’ owners, along with her husband Gary and Roy Rogers.

“I’ve worked at retail stores and flea markets. I was going to go to Cassville, (Mo.) but then found this place,” she said.

Canard is from Newport, Ark., but lived in Rogers for six yearsbefore moving to Pea Ridge to start the business.

“It’s a family operation, I love it,” she said.

The flea market is one of five stops on the Pea Ridge Historical Society’s Tour of Homes this year.

Canard rents booths to sellers and keeps a percentage of the sales. Rental prices vary by booth size.

She said business has been so good, they have already had to add more booths.

The market sells anything from baby clothes to antique furniture to cookie jars.

“There was a gentleman in Rogers who died in August. He had some antique fishing reels and they are for sale here now. The family had a hard time bringing the stuff to sell ... but he enjoyed doing that and now someone else can enjoy it if you sell it,” Canard said.

The flea market is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

It is located at 105 W.
