— Have you ever heard of Rice Babies? Well, Mrs.

James’ third-grade class (my class) made Rice Babies on Nov. 19, 2010. We have been learning about measurements.

Mrs. James had us bring in our birth weights. We found out that two cups of rice weigh one pound.

Then we used cups to measure out enough rice that weighed what we weighed when we were born. We filled a tube sock with therice. Next, we tied off the neck with a blue or pink ribbon and made a little cap at the top of the head.

Then, we drew a face and wrapped our babies in blankets.

Our teacher read us a story called “One Grain of Rice” by author Demi. It was a mathematical folktale. We had lots of fun and excitement learning about measurements!
