President Ione Kauffeldopened the meeting by leading the club in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

The devotions, prepared by Kauffeld, were read by Jean Landauer. One story was about a man who discovered a quantity of clay balls in a cave. He had no idea what to do with them, but gathered them anyway.

Just for amusement he started throwing them into a river. He dropped one clay ball which broke open and discovered a lovely jewel inside. Then he realized that he had thrown many more clay balls into the river without knowing how valuable they were.

People are a lot like these clay balls - some seemingly not lovely on the outside but very valuable when one views their inner beauty. Another lesson read told how St. Paul preferred to be like a clay pot, plain and unremarkable, so that the wonder of God shown through him.

Landauer will give the devotion next month.

Six ladies answered rollcall by telling how they practice food safety in the summer heat. This is twice as many members as last month and hopefully attendance will again be doubled next meeting. Also, young Amber Williams accompanied her mother to the meeting and was very helpful in passing information and materials back and forth.

The minutes were approved as read. The treasurer’s report was given.

Under committee news, it was announced that the NEBCO Turkey Shoot will be held on Sept. 25. Ladies will be asked to contribute baked goods and also to help on the day of the fundraiser.

School starts in Garfield Aug. 19, and several members will again be volunteering to work with the children in various grades.

Canned goods are always welcomed at God’s Pantry.

As reported last month, green beans and other vegetables, fruit, pancake mix and syrup, coffee, tea and stewed tomatoes are alwaysneeded, as well as boxed dinners.

Kauffeld reported on the county board meeting.

There is a freeze on hiring, so there is still no county agent in charge of Extension Club. There are currently 180 county members, 13 or 14 of them being new members. Fair judging, name tags, the Maysville Fun Day, a new thrift store and craft lessons were all discussed.

The fall council meeting will be held Nov. 5 at Cave Springs with a potluck lunch planned. More information will be forthcoming.

Selena Williams brought the nearly completed booth for the fair and was thanked for all her hard work and planning. Kauffeld will arrange to complete the lettering and will deliver it to the fair grounds.

During coffee break, Kauffeld gave some useful tips on unique uses of food. Betty Phillips told a funny joke which was fully enjoyed.

The meeting was concluded with the recitation of the Homemakers’ Pledge.
