— 40 years ago

The president of the Bank of Pea Ridge announced his retirement, two years after the bank was relocated to the corner of Curtis Avenue and Lee Town Road. His replacement was Jim Talbot from Decatur.

Pea Ridge football player Jim Brown was in Conway practicing for the all-stars game to be played at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. Linda Sweeny, Pea Ridge High School cheerleader, was part of the allstar cheer squad.

30 years ago

The Northeast Benton County Rural Fire Association held a barbecue to raise funds for the construction of the new fire station to be located in Garfield to house a truck already on hand.

At the regular monthly school board meeting, a temporary schedule was proposed for the first month of school, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to avoid the heat of the day. It was approved by several members of the board and verified by Carol Ross, senior high principal.

Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Tillman, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Jack Tillman of Garfield, participated in a Strategic Air Command (SAC) exercise at Griffis Air Force Base. The exercise was designed to test the ability of the SAC forces to react to emergency wartime conditions.

20 years ago

The discovery of arrowheads and a potential prehistoric Indian burial ground threatened to delay the construction of a new Jacket Bridge, but the projects engineer said that minor modifications in plans should be sufficient to satisfy all parties.

Twelve Corners Baptist Church held a groundbreaking ceremony after the morning worship.

The Rev. Sam Moore saidchurch members would do all the labor and keep the project debt free.

The defending district football champion Pea Ridge Blackhawks started preparing to defend their crown. They sported a 9-0 record in conference play for the previous three years.

Creative use of space almost doubled the size of Pea Ridge’s Police Department in the Emergency Services Building. Police Chief Tim Ledbetter a new public emergency call box was installed outside the police department.

After a 37.5 kV Carroll Electric transformer blew at Michael Herzberg’s farm, and some other unfortunate events including the failure of the back-up generator, Herzberg lost 8,000 chickens from the heat. After asking for a 50 kV transformer when this happened to him another time, also resulting in the loss of chickens, Carroll Electric replaced the first transformer with the 37.5 kV. They claimed they were not responsible in the poultry loss.

Jeff Henry, a volunteer fireman with the Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department, was called by the United States Forestry Service to help fight fires in the western United States. Henry left for South Carolina to fly to Washington state then on to Nevada.
