— Major General Henry Halleck, the new federal commander in the Department of the Missouri, could not allow the Missouri State Guard to roam free in that state.

Missouri had to be cleared of the pro-Confederate forces before larger campaigns could proceed. He appointed Curtis to head the reorganizing Federal forces to pursue the forces eventually leading to the Battle of Pea Ridge. Hallack (sic) Lane runs south off Slack Street.
