40 Years Ago

A photograph taken at Leroy Creekmore’s farm in Pea Ridge demonstrated the growth of broilers more graphically than words alone would have.

The Creekmores raised 25,000 chickens in two houses of equal size. The first photo showed chicks one-day-old, the second showed 12-days-old and the third showed them ready to go to the processing plant.

A small, newly-constructed building at the rear of Hurd’s Cabinet Company in Garfield was pictured. The building caught and retained wood shavings until they were hauled off to Cates Woodshaving Co. in Fayetteville.

Pea Ridge’s newest business was established by a hometown boy returning to the town from which he and his wife were from.

Ronald Bray Custom Steel Fabricating was founded by Bray and his wife, the former Janice Lee. Both were 1959 graduates of Pea Ridge High School.

30 Years Ago

Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department firefighters Bob Kline, Carl Cavanaugh, Kenneth Ford, Ralston Taylor, Don Toepher and James Melton responded to a brush fire at the Craneproperty near Posy Mountain and fought the fire from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., when the state forestry service arrived.

A petition was passed around Pea Ridge collecting signatures of persons opposing passage by the Benton County Quorum Court of an ordinance to regulate agricultural waste.

Gary Fletcher started his saw mill with the purpose of having enough wood for his house and buildings, but once word got out he had the mill, people wanted him to saw for them.

Fletcher was pictured with his father, Dow, putting a new belt on their equipment.

20 Years Ago

Pea Ridge City Council passed an ordinance clarifying the previous ordinance on imprudent driving, as a charge was dismissed the previous month in City Court because of vagueness.

Clayton S. Turner, of Pea Ridge, was promoted to the rank of private first class in Battery A First Battalion 142nd Field Artillery at Bentonville National Guard.

The Pea Ridge Blackhawks whipped the Decatur Bulldogs to once again capture the title of 1-A West champions.

10 Years Ago

The City of Pea Ridge agreed to provide labor for installing a water line from Arkansas Hwy. 94 to the corner of the projected new clubhouse of the Sugar Creek Golf and Country Club if the developers purchased the materials.

The city also committed $100,000 over the following two years for street improvements.

Laurie and Vic Steilow were pictured amidst the beginnings of their new office, “The Pentagon,” at Quail Oaks Craft Fair.

The couple was gearing up for the spring’s craft fair weekend.

Pea Ridge was part of a pilot program for Girl Scouting in the Schools, a national program. NOARK Girl Scouts Council held breakfast meetings in the elementary school media center before school for girls who may not have been able to attend traditional meetings.
