Historical Pea Ridge ....... A FRAGMENT OF AREA HISTORY

— Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch, commander, McCulloch’s Division, Army of the West, was a tough frontiersman who commanded the Confederate troops from Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana. He was born in Tennessee in 1811 and went to Texas in 1835, but missed joining his friend Davy Crockett in the Alamo due to the measles.

He had been a Texas ranger, an Army scout, a gold miner, a representative to the legislatures of both the Republic and State of Texas, commander of the Texas Republic’s militia and a U.S. marshall. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Pea Ridge.

McCulloch Street in Pea Ridge runs east and west between North Curtis Avenue and Weston Street.
