Notes From the Nurse: Flu clinics scheduled

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

— Each campus has sent home packets with students regarding the school flu clinics. The clinic dates are Nov. 31 for sixth through 12th grades, and Dec. 1 for kindergarten through fifth grades. Remember, this is strictly parent/guardian choice.

No student is required to take theses vaccines. We do urge that since our clinic is later, that anyone who can, please go to the mass clinics held by the health department. We included those dates in the packets.

Antibody build up takes two to four weeks, so the sooner the better. The CDC does expect some kind of incidence wave pattern with both types of influenza. Right now the numbers of people with the flu are higher than normal for this time of year. The H1N1 is widespread and the seasonal flu is lower in numbers but has appeared earlier than normal as well.

You can check daily flu news if you have any kind of access to a computer.

Just go to www.flu.gov for the latest information. The CDC posts information and has a live broadcast on Friday afternoons in their newsroom for updates. You can listen to it online. We will try to provide updated information as it occurs on the school website as well.

A note of importance.

Please read the information we sent home thoroughly if you want your student to receive the vaccine.

The department of health requires signatures on two separate sheets of paper. If the forms are incomplete, no vaccine will be given.

We will make attempts to contact you for missing signatures. If you have any questions about your child receiving a vaccine, please contact your physician.

You may accompany yourstudent to the clinic if you wish. There will be health department staff on site with lots of information and also to answer questions.

We have asked for volunteers and many have responded. If you would like to assist with the school clinics, please contact your child’s campus nurse.

There will be a training session involved and a date for that will be set soon. I will be at the Intermediate school on both conference nights. Please feel free to stop by and visit.
