New Meadowbrook Ext. Homemakers Club

President Ione Kauffeld led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roxie Geddie based her devotion on John 3:16. It is important to remember that we are not in total control of our lives, but must rely on the ultimate authority, and that we must not cling to resentments but let them go. Jean Landauer will give devotions next month.

Selena Williams and Lucy Young were welcomed and became members. Roll call was answered by nine members telling if they used any homemade cleaning products. The minutes from the September meeting were read and accepted. The treasurer’s report was given by the president.

VAS Ambulance Service is sponsoring a rodeo at the county fairgrounds Oct. 23-24, starting at 8 p.m.. The facilities have been checked out and volunteers are needed to take tickets and serve food.

At the NEBCO Turkey Shoot, over 400 dinners were served. The raffle, silent auction and regular auction were slower than in previous years, possibly due to the economy. The EHC quilt was won by Marcia Graham.

Volunteers are busy at the Garfield school helping students excel. Club members include Ione Kauffeld, Jean Landauer and Rheta Van Doren.

The next club workday is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. There is at least one quilt to be tied. Helpers should bring a sack lunch and plan to work until at least 1 p.m.

There is a county cultural workshop at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, on making aprons. Participants need to supply one yard main fabric and one and one half yards coordinating fabric. Help will also be given on the Afghan stitch from a former workshop. A holiday workshop will be held on November 19 when participant will make Christmas decorations, ornaments and thread art. There will be kits available at $3 for each items.

The country store did well at the county fair. Profits were about $2,000. Baked goods and recent books and magazines sold well. Craft books of any vintage also did well. There is a n ongoing problem in the amount of room given to quilts and keeping visitors from handling the quilts. Next year more gloved attendants are recommended to solve that problem.

The EHC theme for the coming year is “Fit in 10,” beginning at the January meeting.

On Nov. 11, the regular meeting will be planning the Christmas dinner at Autumn Place, followed by a Thanksgiving meal at the Crumpet Tea Room. Donations of food will be collected for the new Garfield food pantry, God’s Pantry. They would like items to provide families with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Suggested items include canned pumpkin, green beans, cranberries, turkeys, raisins, cinnamon, etc. Everyday items needed include canned meats, pasta, canned goods, macaroni and cheese and groceries of any kind. Toiletries, used blankets, used furniture and toys are also in demand. Any of these items can be brought to either the November or December club meetings.

After the coffee break, Karen Launderville gave a most interesting lesson on over-the-counter medicines. It is important to read all information on meds, both prescribed and over-the-counter, so that ingredients are not doubled. When in doubt, check with your doctor.

Selena had two ideas for the 2010 fair booth. She also volunteered to take pictures of activities and projects. Ione will make a new member’s list to be distributed in November and Roxie will take the new members’ names to the county. Becky Warner and Eula Anderson are both home recuperating. We wish them a speedy recovery.

The meeting was adjourned by all reciting the Extension Homemakers Creed. COMMUNITY EVENTS

New parks restrooms discussed at commission

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Pea Ridge Parks Commission met Wednesday, Oct. 7, to discuss plans to erect new restroom facilities at City Park.

Bill Ryan and Michael Ogburn joined JKJ Architecture’s John Mack at the park to scope out the location for the new facilities.

Mack worked with the town of Pea Ridge in the past on the community building and also constructed the restrooms at Veteran’s Park in Rogers.

The group plans to meet again soon to take a look at the restrooms at Veteran’s Park. They are in the early stages of this project, and hope to begin soon.

Mack was asked to supply drawings of what the group envisioned, then the town will move forward with accepting bids for the project.

Funds are in the city’s impact fees designated for the Parks Commission.
