— First Baptist Church, Pea Ridge

Quilting classes are held at 6 p.m. Monday nights. For more information, call the church office at 451-8192.

There will be no Wednesday activities Nov. 25, and the church office will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27, in observance of Thanksgiving.

First Baptist Church, Garfield

“Ignite” student ministry will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening. Adult Prayer service is at 7 p.m.

AWANA will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. It is for children from Pre-K age 4 to sixth grade.

The Christmas program, “God Speaking,” will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. It is a music and drama presentation.

The dates for this year’s family mission trip to Piedras Negras, Mexico, are Dec. 27-31. For more information call 359-3496.

Free Will Baptist Church, Pea Ridge

The Christmas program has been set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

Messiah Lutheran Church, Pea Ridge

Messiah Lutheran Church Sunday School starts at 9:30 and worship service is at 10:30. Youth fellowship is on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Messiah Lutheran will be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with a service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 26. The regular meeting times are 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays for Children’s Ministry, 9:30 a.m. Sunday School and 10:30 a.m. worship service. There will be refreshments served after worship service each Sunday. Advent services will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, Pea Ridge

Hanging of the Greens will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, to decorate the sanctuary and the outside of the church.

Dawn Scarborough, director of Church Relations at the University of the Ozarks of Clarksville, will attend the service Nov. 29 and provide information about the school at the Fifth Sunday lunch after church.

The Fifth Sunday lunch will be hosted by the Presbyterian Women. Rather than the typical November meal, the menu will be spaghetti, salad and garlic bread. Desserts and a variety of salads and other dishes that will compliment the spaghetti will be needed.

New Prospect Baptist Church, Garfield

The church donates to God’s Pantry in the community now at Dennett’s Hardware on U.S. Hwy. 62. For information, call 359-2079.

Village Bible Evangelical Free, Bella Vista

The Oasis Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

40 Years Ago

Fred McKinney was pictured braving the 27-degree weather to make applebutter. He stirred the traditional silver dollar around in the bottom of a copper kettle with the traditional birch paddle to keep the bubbling applebutter from sticking.

Mrs. Eva Nickerson and her employees at the Pea Ridge Cage saved all their tips for Victor DeGroff since he was injured in a highway collision the previous June that left him paralyzed and still hospitalized.

The third-grade class of Mrs. Bertha Cloyd expressed the things for which they were thankful, including Michael Goines being thankful for turkey, snow and clothes, Phillip Miser being thankful for the beautiful earth and Gloria Lucas being thankful for clothes, brothers, aunts, mothers and fathers.

Alpha Nu’s annual style show featuring local models with wardrobes from area merchants was held at the Pea Ridge High School cafeteria. Entertainment for the show was provided by Kathy Higgins, soloist from the UArkettes and pianist Bert Baumgartner, a professional music composer and arranger retired and living in Garfield. Home economics teacher Anne Hughes did the commentary.

Guests lined both sides of the long table in the basement of the Wood-Hall Post 8109 Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Pea Ridge in a picture of the free potluck dinner for all veterans and their families. Ham and drinks were provided by the Post.

The Pea Ridge Graphic Scene gathered at least one recipe from each of the female staff members and included two complete holiday menus on page four of that week’s edition. Doris Leak, Country Kitchen editor, promised party and gift ideas to come before Christmas.

A scare of contaminated water in the Garfield area forced the city’s officials to have the state Health Department test the city’s water. Rumors were circulating through town that people had gotten sick from drinking the water. The rumors started when a construction crew broke a water line and residents of the Avoca and Garfield area were asked to boil their water. Tests revealed, however, that the water was perfect.

Karen Reeder, of Seligman, Mo., won the grand prize in the Second Annual TIMES Good Cook cookoff. Her winning dish was Chuck Wagon Salad. The grand prize was $100 of groceries from Food 4 Less.

Pea Ridge kindergarten teacher Sarah Whitted had her own name listed on the 1989 kindergarten honor roll list for the first quarter, under the heading “Kindergarten Skill Masters.”

10 Years Ago

The first ever Pea Ridge lighting ceremony was scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 5, in downtown Pea Ridge. Celebrations included caroling, refreshments and Christmas lights being lit. The ceremony was a gift to the residents of Pea Ridge from the Pea Ridge Sesquicentennial Committee. The Christmas parade was held the day before, themed “Country Christmas.”

The Clyde “Pea Ridge” Day memorial plaque fund continued to increase with the sale of daylillies at Everdale Gardens. The fund had reached $83.54 and the goal was $1,000.

Local students from Pea Ridge that made the 33rd annual edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students were Brent Bone, Alisha Easter, Ashley Glass, Erin Henson, Jenny Robbins, Stephanie Vickers, Jason Crosley, Laurie Fowler, Katie Hardwicke, Diana Morris, Brittany Vickers and Christina Ward.
