Sweets are the specialty

— People with a sweet tooth have a new place to fulfill their desires.

Cookies, Creams and Other Sweet Things opened their doors Monday.

One special feature will be “The Hawk” - any slice of pie may be blended with any flavor ice cream.

Featuring home-made cookies, brownies, pies and fudge, the new sweet shop is in the former Scoops ice cream shop in the Battlefield Plaza on the southeast corner of Lee Town Road andSouth Curtis Avenue.

“Our chocolate chip cookie is probably my specialty,” Larry Gann, owner said, admitting he bakes all the cookies. “We have a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich that’s wonderful.”

Gann and his wife, Donna, opened the shop as a long-time dream.

“We’ve always wanted to do it.

My wife is a terrific Cajun cook.

I’m going to be up here most of the time, she’ll spell me after work,” he said, adding that their sons will help, as well.

The Ganns have seven childrenbetween them with two teen-age sons - Kory, 18, and Michael, 14 - still at home.

“I do all the cookies and she does the fudge and candies,” Gann said of his wife, Donna, who works full time at Fuels and Supplies in Springdale.

“When I was a youth pastor, I used to do all the cooking on the mission trips. It was the most economical way,” Gann said, adding that he began with his mother’s cookie recipe, but added and deleted ingredients until he found what he wanted.

He said most of the recipesare from his mother and grandmother.

Real butter is one of the ingredients, Gann admitted, saying he alternates using cream or meringue for toppings on the pies.

Holiday pies may be ordered for take out.

He was a youth pastor from the mid-1970s until 2002. Now he is the worship leader at First Baptist Church, Pea Ridge.

The Ganns plan to have the shop open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
