— Kelley/Jones to wed

Patrick and Loretta Kelley, of Pea Ridge, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer, to Jeffrey Jones of Pea Ridge.

Kelley is the granddaughter of the late Elmo and Dorothy Kelley and the late Leroy Penrod and Lessie Elliott.

She has three children, Tristan and Rebecca Dubert and Jonathan Kelley, all of Pea Ridge.

Kelley is a 1995 graduate of Park Avenue Christian School Home Study Program, Springfield, Mo. She is employed as an administrative assistant for Colliers International in Bentonville.

Jones is the son of Sharon and Cecil McLeroy of Rogers and Burt and Sherry Jones of Burleson, Texas. He is the grandson of the late Lester and Betty Waldrop and Don Jones and Mona Jones, all of Dallas, Texas. He has one child, Baleigh Jones, of Tahlequah, Okla.

Jones is a 1996 graduate of Stilwell High School in Stilwell, Okla., and works as a machinist.

The ceremony is set for 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Cornerstone Assembly of God Church in Rogers.

OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST

The Pea Ridge Optimist Club will award a $500 first place scholarship and a $350 second place scholarship to the winners of this year’s essay contest.

The topic is “The Internet: Today’s Evolution or Tomorrow’s Menace?”

The scholarships will be awarded to the student when they have selected a college that they are planning to attend and by supplying their student identification and the college to which the money is to be applied.

Interested students must be under the age of 19 as of Dec. 31. Pick up an application from a teacheror by calling Bill Meyers, 644-5423, or Sandy Lasiter, 903-6795. Completed applications and essays should be returned to them as well. The deadline is Jan. 14, 2010.

The Optimist Club will sponsor an additional contest for younger schoolage children in the junior high level, who will be graded on the same scale and the same topic. The awards will be a $50 gift card for first place and a $25 gift card for second place.

Those who have won in the past will not be eligible to participate in this year’s program.

MILITARY NEWS

Air Force Airman 1st Class Zachary J. Cantrell graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Melissa Cantrell of Kay Lynn Drive, Pea Ridge, Ark.

Cantrell is a 2009 graduate of Northwest Arkansas Academy of Fine Arts, Rogers, Ark.

SCHOOL NEWSAsh awarded scholarship

FAYETTEVILLE - Adam Ash, an agricultural business major from Pea Ridge High School, has been awarded one of 10 scholarships through Arkansas Farm Bureau.

In memory of Romeo E.

Short, Ash was awarded $2,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. Ash will study in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

The Romeo E. Short Foundation was established in 1954 with contributions from county farm bureaus in memory of Romeo Ennis Short of Brinkley. He was a founding member of the Arkansas Farm Bureau in 1935.

He also served as assistant secretary of agriculture in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was vice president of the American Farm Bureau.

In 1955, the Romeo E.

Short Foundation established a non-endowed scholarship within the Bumpers College to recognize and award talented students who are poised to become Arkansas’ next agricultural leaders. More than 250 students have benefited from the Arkansas Farm Bureau-Romeo E.

Short Scholarship since its inception.

Food drive

Pea Ridge High School is holding a food drive through Friday, Dec. 11, sponsored by JAG, Jobs for Arkansas Graduates. Deliver non-perishable, kidfriendly foods to the high school office dedicating to which first hour class for them to compete for a pizza party. Everyone can make a change in the Pea Ridgecommunity.

Candy grams for sale

Candy Grams (candy canes) will be sold by the Pea Ridge Middle School PTO Dec. 7-11 for 50 centseach. They will be sold in the mornings before school and during lunch and delivered on Friday, Dec. 11.

Parents may order candy grams for their children by contacting the school.

Holiday cards for sale

The Pea Ridge Middle School Art Department still has 10 sets of holiday cards for sale. The cards were handmade by a seventh- and eighth-grade art class.

Fifteen cards and envelopes sell for $7.50. Contact Mrs. Bruhin if you are interested. All money raised will support the middle school PTO.

PTO for high school

Pea Ridge High School would like to facilitate a Parent-Teacher Organization group. If interested in helping to organize a PTO for PRHS, contact Rhonda Daniels at rdaniels@prs.

Winter Ball

The third annual Pea Ridge High School Winter Ball will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at the high school.

Semester Test Schedule

Semester tests have been scheduled for Dec. 17 and 18. The test schedule will be sent out later.

Pancake Breakfast

Pea Ridge High School AP Biology class will be holding an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday, Dec. 19, at Applebee’s Restaurant at 528 N. 47th St. in Rogers. Admission is $5 per person and the money will go towards the upcoming trip. See any AP Biology student for tickets.
