PEA RIDGE — 40 Years Ago

Victor DeGroff was pictured trying his hand at a brand new typewriter purchased for him by approximately 350 friends, many of whom he had never heard of, while he was hospitalized.

An article by Billie Jines told of a corner of Patterson Cemetery in which no one was buried. The reason was because there was already unmarked graves there - graves of former slaves.

Pea Ridge head football coach Bill Lookadoo was named coach of the year in District 1B, Blackhawk Jim Brown was named outstanding back and Brown and other players placed in positions on the “All-District” football teams.

The Dec. 26 issue of the Pea Ridge Graphic Scene was to be the last.

The paper’s name would from then on be known as the Pea Ridge Country TIMES. The local editor explained that the change was being made primarily because the area served by the paper was really one community, recognized for a long time as Pea Ridge country.

Pea Ridge Junior High boys extended their winning streak to five games and, in doing so, advanced themselves to the semi-finals of the Benton County Basketball Tournament in Gravette. The ’Hawks defeated Siloam Springs 35 to 28 to win their fifth game.

Pea Ridge City Court Judge Thurston Thompson announced that he would be a candidate for election to the Benton/Carroll County Circuit Court.

Three area fire departments - Pea Ridge, Avoca and NEBCO - responded to a mobile home fire at Jones Trailer Park near 12 Corners. The mobile home, owned by Wendall Jones, was a complete loss.

A shortage of EMTs caused Pea Ridge residents to encounter slight delays in getting service from the Pea Ridge ambulance.

Pea Ridge entries in the Benton County Basketball Tournament were eliminated in either the first or second round. The tournament high point players were senior high players Angie Paulsen and Mark Davis.

Over 200 Pea Ridge residents came downtown to witness the first Christmas Lighting Ceremony, a gift to the city from the Sesquicentennial Committee. Mayor Jackie Crabtree welcomed the crowd and members of the community and handed out hot cider and cookies inside City Hall.

The Pea Ridge Board of Education considered bids and recommendations for furnishings for the new high school at its regular monthly meeting.

The Girl Scouts of Pea Ridge, troops 198 and 457, were pictured and thanked the community for helping with donations to the Thanksgiving food drive.

Kalya Liddell, Alex Swift, Jessica Beenken and Alex Hearn were all crowned in the Royalty Ceremony at the Pea Ridge Fall Festival.

First Baptist Church, Pea Ridge

Quilting classes are held at 6 p.m. Monday nights. For more information, call the church office at 451-8192.

Dye’s Sunday School potluck will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in the youth room.

Anyone who would like to participate in decorating the church for Christmas, plan on being at the church at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

Saturday, Dec. 5, the church will participate in the Pea Ridge Christmas Parade with the TeamKID float.

The youth Christmas party will be at 6 p.m.. Saturday, Dec. 12.

Christmas caroling will begin at 6 p.m. at the church and go until 7 p.m. For more information, contact Larry Gann at 451-8192.

The candle light service will be held at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.

First Baptist Church, Garfield

“Ignite” student ministry will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening. Adult Prayer service is at 7 p.m.

AWANA will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. It is for children from pre-kindergarten age 4 to sixth grade.

The Adult III Christmas Party is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4.

The Christmas program, “God Speaking,” will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. It is a music and drama presentation.

The Ladies’ Ministry Christmas party will be held Saturday, Dec. 19.

The dates for this year’s family mission trip to Piedras Negras, Mexico, are Dec. 27-31. For more information call 359-3496.

The Christmas program has been set for 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

Messiah Lutheran Church, Pea Ridge

Messiah Lutheran Church Sunday School starts at 9:30 and worship service is at 10:30. Youth fellowship is on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Advent services will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
