Thursday, August 28, 1969

One Blackhawk player, John Lasater, suffered defeat before the first football game. He had the misfortune to break his collar bone in football practice just a couple of days after fall practice began, and the doctor forbid him to play that season.

Tim Wood, of Pea Ridge, as a member of the 43rd Engineers stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., was in the Hurricane Camille area of Mississippi, where his company had been assigned to set up water purification for the Red Cross and help in clearing roads.

The most fertile soil in Pea Ridge, said Clint Mount, may be the courtyard in the exact center of the downtown business section. Having noticed that tomatoes in his garden seemed inclined to get a blight each year, Mount discussed with Pea Ridge Furniture Store operator George Wells the prospect of planting three tomato plants outside the backdoor of the store.

Rep. Clayton Little's chicken dinner got most of the attention of those in a candid Graphic Scene photo. At the left of the photo, seated and wearing their white robes, were two of the Ku Klux Klan members, Don Gobel, Ft.

Smith, and Randy Howard, Garfield. Immediately behind Howard was state Sen. Kim Hendren and his wife Mary Lea Hendren. Identifiable just behind Hendren was County Judge Al Norwood.

Pansy P. Gastineau, Pea Ridge, had recently been named a Certified Volunteer of America by her sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha International.

When the Pea Ridge Blackhawks entered football battle that year, they faced eight other teams for the championship of the 1-A West conference.

There was heavy traffic congestion and a lot of parents and children on the grounds of Pea Ridge School Monday as the first day of classes for the 1989-1990 school year began. Superintendent Marvin Higginbottom said that the district enrolled approximately 41 new students at the elementary school for the new year.

A political rally, with entertainment, speeches and free food was held Saturday, Sept. 9, on the campus of Pea Ridge High School.

Work on improvements to Arkansas Highway 265 should have been completed no later than Oct. 1, said Jack Brisco, resident engineer for the Arkansas Highway Department. Pea Ridge Mayor Mary Rogers said that a date for a ceremony to officially open the highway would be set within two weeks.

Joyce Hale, of Pea Ridge, was one of the three recipients of the Single Parent Scholarship Fund Committee's annual Tribute Awards.

Eric, Nikita and Kelsey Mitchell of Pea Ridge had some prize winning pigs. They had been exhibiting at 4-H mini jackpot shows around the county in preparation for the Benton County Fair.

Lauren Coleman and Ryan Cooper, seventh graders at Pea Ridge Middle School, worked at learning station computers in Tracy Kiney's classroom.

Pea Ridge Middle School received 22 Compaq computers with the help of VFW Post No.

100 in Bella Vista.
